Porto Ercole: A Hidden Harbor in Tuscany

Porto Ercole is a small coastal town in southern Tuscany, part of the Monte Argentario peninsula in the province of Grosseto. Surrounded by hills and facing a tranquil bay, it has long been a retreat for Italian and international visitors seeking a quieter experience than the cities of Tuscany.

Unlike many tourist-heavy destinations, Porto Ercole still feels like a local town. Fishing boats come and go from the harbor, and narrow streets lead up to scenic viewpoints with wide sea views.

Fortresses, Sea Views and Quiet Streets

The history of Porto Ercole dates back to Etruscan times, but most of what you see today is from the period when the Spanish ruled the area. The town is guarded by three forts – Forte Filippo, Forte Stella and Forte Santa Caterina – which offer impressive views of the coastline and surrounding sea.

In the heart of the town, visitors can explore the old harbor and enjoy fresh seafood, local wine and slow afternoons by the water. A short walk or taxi ride leads to nearby coves and small beaches, many of which are known only to locals.

Sailing into Porto Ercole

Due to its size and protected location, Porto Ercole is not a place for large cruise ships. But for small ship cruises exploring the western Italian coast, it offers a perfect stop. It allows guests to experience an elegant, authentic town without crowds or pressure.

For many, Porto Ercole is a reminder of what the Mediterranean used to be: simple, beautiful, and close to nature.
