Welcome to Malaga
Málaga sits on the southern coast of Spain, where Andalusia meets the Mediterranean. This port city offers a mix of culture, sunshine, and sea. With many cruises starting or ending here, Málaga is the perfect place to spend a day or two before or after your trip.
It is easy to explore, welcoming, and full of character.
What to See in Malaga
Málaga’s most iconic landmarks reflect its long and varied past. Start with the Alcazaba, a hilltop fortress with arches, courtyards, and garden paths. Above it stands Gibralfaro Castle, where the views stretch from the port to the surrounding hills. At the foot of the hill lies the Roman Theatre, still partly intact after two thousand years. Just a few blocks away, the Cathedral rises over the old town with its unfinished tower and quiet interior.
The city is also the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. His childhood home and a dedicated museum are both in the old center. Nearby streets are filled with cafés, orange trees, and traditional houses, inviting visitors to walk without a map.
Things to Do During the Day
Málaga is as much about everyday life as it is about monuments. Taste grilled sardines by the sea or try local dishes like Ajoblanco, a cold almond soup. Visit the Atarazanas Market, where stalls overflow with a variety of fresh fruits, fish, and spices. The waterfront promenade, Muelle Uno, is a lively spot for dining, shopping, or simply enjoying the view.
Wines from the surrounding region are served across the city, from beach bars to elegant restaurants. For a quiet break, find a rooftop terrace or walk through a shady square.
From Romans to Picasso
Málaga has been a coastal city for nearly three thousand years. First settled by Phoenicians, it later became a Roman town and a stronghold of Islamic Al-Andalus. Each chapter of its past has left something behind; a wall, a gate, a story.
One of its most famous sons, Pablo Picasso, was born here in 1881. His influence still fills the city’s galleries and murals, adding to Málaga’s creative spirit. With so much to see and experience, this is a place that rewards curiosity and deserves a little extra time.
